Jamie was reunited on Heart Breakfast with Amanda after he revealed last September he had been diagnosed with cancer
Jamie Theakston has shared a major update in his cancer journey to Amanda Holden as they reunited on Heart Breakfast for the first time since his diagnosis.
Last year, the broadcaster told listeners that he will be off air for some time after undergoing surgery for a health problem. Then in September, the 53-year-old confirmed he had been diagnosed with cancer in a social media post.
In a detailed statement about his condition, Jamie told fans: ‘”I have cancer but cancer does not have me,” as he revealed that he was diagnosed with stage one laryngeal cancer.
On Friday (January 17), his radio co-host Amanda teased a big announcement, as she said a very familiar face would be joining them on the show. Jamie then walked through the door, and Amanda said it was “so weird” to have him back and said he looks “tanned and thinner,” while asking about his new hair cut.
Opening up to his friend and co-host as well as listeners, Jamie said the last five months had been “awful” before he continued: “Today is the fourth month anniversary of my cancer diagnosis and I’ve had enough of hospitals and operations and it’s so nice to be back.”
He then added: “But I’ve got some news for you,” before sharing a major update on his health as he told Amanda: “As of today I’m cancer free.”
Jamie spoke about what has happened during his cancer journey, admitting he has had ‘scan-anxiety’. “Everyone who has been through what I’ve been through will know you just get a barrage of statistics,” the star said.
He continued: “There’s a one in ten chance you won’t survive it, and you kind of go ‘Oh, OK’ I’ll take that. I had to do several surgeries, and the first surgery wasn’t as successful as we hoped.
“Then there was a second surgery, and then a third, and each time I was doing more and more damage to my vocal chords. By the third one they said, well you’ve got a one in six chance that you might not be able to talk again. I thought OK, that’s like rolling a dice, I’ll take that, It’s just statistics after statistics.”
